It was a dark and foggy night...

Made it safely back to Calgary this evening, thought the last 1/3 of the trip was a little nerve-wracking.

The first part of the trip, to a little past Medicine Hat, was just fine.  Near the exit to Milo however, a thick fog started to settle in.  The sun had also gone down by then, so that only made the situation worse.  In several areas, the fog was so thick you couldn't see more than 50' in front of your vehicle.  I slowed down to a point where I felt I could make a safe panic-stop if I had to, but other drivers kept whipping past me in the left lane.

There is no way those drivers could have seen where they were going, unless they had some kind of forward-seeking radar or sonar on their vehicles.  Just about every one of them was a large pickup or SUV, racing along the highway at top speed.  I'm surprised I didn't come across any accident scenes, but I guess people got lucky.  Driving through the town of Strathmore, the fog was so thick you couldn't see across the street, yet people were not only driving at the speed limit (top speed under ideal conditions, you idiots!), but most of them were exceeding that limit.  Unbelievable!!!

At any rate, I made it back safely, in spite of the idiots I had to share the road with.  In Calgary, the roads were wet (going to freeze, and make for slick driving later), and another moron was not only speeding, but weaving in and out of traffic.  Young kid driving a souped-up sports car...  And then they wonder why insurance is so expensive...

Augh! dont. even. get. me. started. about. insurance!  Still furious about the trouble Royal Sun Alliance is giving me.  Going to stop here, before I start ranting again!

If they'd at least lick the backs of my ears...

It seems that the insurance company just doesn't want to play nicely.  Our agent is doing all he can to plead our case, but it seems like we're going to get shafted.  We can't even use the "we'll take our business elsewhere" threat, as they don't even want our business anymore!  Yes, not only are they rejecting my claim, they're also dumping us as clients!

What bothers me the most is that first of all, we were paying an extra premium because the house was rented out, rather than owner-occupied.  Secondly, the company was fully aware that there was a pending claim in February 2008, and they charged me close to another $1000 to update the policy from rented to vacant when the tenants abandoned the premesis.  They certainly had no qualms about taking my money, but now that it's time to pay up, they're refusing.

Royal Sun Alliance is, in my opinion, nothing but a collection of crooks.  We paid all their premiums and requests in good faith, followed all the rules, and in the end we're getting shafted.  They're basing part of the refusal to pay on the fact that there was no one keeping an eye on the property when it froze, and thus they're off the hook.  Under normal circumstances, they'd be right.  But in this case, I was paying the "rental" rate for insurance, the tenants abandoned the property without telling me, so I had no way of knowing no one was watching it, and what the heck am I paying the extra rate for, if not to protect me from the tenants doing something assinine like thatt?

I know a few other folks here, like Jim Groat (aka[info]krag_carbine ) who have recently been giving the going-over by their insurance companies.  I guess I'm a member of the club now...   :P

On a more positive note, I now know what's wrong with Lane 5 at the bowling alley.  I've tracked the problem down to the motor-controller board, which is something that I can definitely fix myself.  The trick is that I need my equipment (which is all currently packed) and I could really use a set of schematics for it.  I could reverse-engineer the board, but that's a very long and drawn-out process that I'd rather avoid if possible.  Apparently, a new board is around $800, and I know there's nothing worth more than $1 on that board.  It's a simple double-sided board, and the most advanced thing on it is a 7400 TTL chip.  Trying to remember my 7400-series ICs, but I think that's a NAND gate.  Anyway, no way I'm paying $800 to replace a board I can fix myself for a couple bucks once I get my equipment set up again.

Our liquor-permit application is going to be delayed for another week, since the RCMP office closed before I could get there to submit a form.  They were supposed to be open until 5pm, but when I got there at 4:30pm, the office was already locked up.  Great...  One of the issues in a small town, I guess.  It will be Monday before I can get the form to them, and then I have to go back to Calgary for more packing and moving.  The results only take a couple of days, but I'm the only one allowed to pick them up, Trixstir can't do it for me, due to the Privacy of Information Act.  Apparently, parents can't even see a police report on their minor child (if there is one) due to that Act!  I want to know which of the MPs let that little fart of legislation get by...  I'd better stop this thread now before I go off on a huge rant about Canada's Young Offenders Act and other legislation that effectively denies parents the ability to be parents.

Trying to remember what else happened today...  Friday nights are always good for business, so that's always a plus.  Tomorrow we're supposed to get some decent weather, so I think we'd best get the Christmas lights put up on the bowling alley.  Not going to turn them on mind you, just get them set up.  I don't like turning the Christmas lights on before December 1st, or the 1st Sunday of Advent, whichever comes first.

Things I do despite my better judgment
I am not paying attention at work.

Or at least that's how it feels.. one of the horses decided to try to jump on my person and ended up injuring the muscle in my arm in the process.  I feel pretty lucky considering that I could have sustained a brutal head injury instead.. but i really wanted to go to the gym today.  because...

I am going to MFF.

Normally I would not go to a hotel con... at all.  It's something that I got out of the habit of doing simply because going to feral pretty much gave me all the 'con' that I wanted, and I didn't spend most of my time wandering around thinking "where the fuck did my friends go?" and "jesus, who the hell ARE these people?"  I did go to Morphicon in Columbus and had a decent time with my friends, but the time I spent by myself was not great.  So, regardless, I'm going to see who I can track down at MFF to hang out with.. maybe this will be the shake-up that my social life needs right now.

I just spent 75 bucks on clothes.

I almost -never- buy clothes.  I am generally not too concerned with looking great, though that has changed over the past year or so.  A while back i forced my friends to take me clothes shopping, and after a few hours I got my hands on some really decent stuff.. and evidently even Value Village has some really nice clothes hiding amongst the "I can't believe that -anybody- ever wore that" items.  I got a rockin' nice long coat for 15 bucks, some dress pants and cargo pants, and some decent sweaters that I think I will actually wear.  I will soon drop off some of the clothes that I no longer wear and someone else can look at them and say "I can't believe that Miami ever wore that".  I did wear it, just not all that often.

I took an online quiz.

I generally fucking -hate- these things.  it's not like I actually put any stock in their results, of course.. they're supposed to be fun.  but i took "the gay test".  I'm not sure if the answers were supposed to be ironic, or possibly vaguely homophobic.. but evidently the quiz author believes that "gay" means "mincing".  Some would say that I take this kind of thing too seriously, but to me it's like being told that you're not American unless you're a Palin Republican - all of you un-American areas of the US know what I'm talking about, I'm sure.  I guess the fact that I enjoy sucking cock.. check that.. LOVE sucking cock.. no wait, even better.. PREFER sucking cock... I guess that doesn't make me gay.  That whole "sexual preference" thing notwithstanding.. you know.. the whole -definition- part of it.  Oh yeah and I take it up the ass.. just not from you ;)

It puts me in mind of a brief but memorable conversation I had on IRC (remember IRC?) a good many years ago, where someone in a gay chatroom was going on about how they were "more gay" than some of the others there.  Maybe this schmuck was the same guy that wrote the test.. who fucking knows, i digress.  After a while of his "holier-than-thou" (gayer-than-thou?) attitude I decided to blow his mind with the statement "hey buddy, i suck more cock AT ONE TIME than you see in a whole weekend".  I still don't think that he understood what I was getting at: when your comments are that far outside of someone's paradigm it's tough for them to figure out where the fuck you're coming from.  Anyway, I know I should have a thicker skin about this, but honestly it just goes to show.. whether serious or not.. there are a lot of exclusionist attitudes out there.

So yeah, it seems I'm willing to do things that i would otherwise not normally do.. it must be a phase.

Midwest furfest
Heading south on Wen to meet up the lovely Steins. From there we'll drive to Chicago, spend the night at the Cawis and hit the con early Friday morning for set up. Here's hoping the westher behaves! We've had a snow fall last night and the weather is calling for more. Chicago at least seems like it will be cold but not snowy.

So, I'll be at my table most hours. I'll be selling regular and jumbo prints, bookmarks, calendars, my new full colour art book (!), Wild cat decks, Totem decks and an assortment of Will's books including the fabulours horror anthology, "Alone in the Dark". And last but not least I'll be doing badges, sketches and sketchbooks:) I'm going to try some waterolour badges at the table for the first time as Caribou has shown me an excellent way to do it:) Thanks Sara!

I'll be hanging around after the con for a few days at the Cawis. That will mean boat sushi before they fly out to somewhere or other to do the Thanksgiving stuff for a couple days, leaving me in sole posession of the house. Bwa ha ha ha. That means I'll be doing my annual Brookfield zoo trip all by my lonesome. But that's cool:) I'll be able to backtrack as many times as I want! Hoping for warm weather so the Okapi will be outside. The indoor exhibit is utterly impossible to take photos at.

Please feel free to drop by my booth at the con and say hi:)

Keep moving forward
“Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things… and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”

I saw that in the end of a movie last night and I almost cried right then and there. I am crying now because I have been looking backwards.. I have been thinking what if I did this or that.. would my dad be alive? would I still have my job? What if ..

No. No more what if. I can't look back anymore.

I have to keep moving forward. I was getting angry over things that are stupid. So I don't get alot of traffic on FA. So? That's not important. The real reason that I should draw is that I feel inspired to and I want to do it.. for one person. Me.

I have been blind to alot of things lately and also depressed. But that's ok. As long as my depression doesn't STOP me from doing things and trying to get a job.. then that's fine. I can be depressed every now and again.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwTp4R9t2CM is the movie and the song at the end is also really good it's called "Little wonders" by Rob Thomas and it's a great song.

That's about it. If I lashed out at you these past few days I am very sorry. I tried to keep it under wraps but .. it's gotten bad lately.

When I get a job it'll pan out

LJ News Special Edition: Server Move, Permanent Account Sale Update, A La Carte Userpics
Welcome to a Very Special Edition of LJ News.

Moving Day and What It Means for You

Moving What Where?

The long-awaited server move takes place this Tuesday, November 18, at 8:00 a.m. PST. We're moving the site from servers based in San Francisco to the servers in our new data center in Montana. A massive data move like this takes a lot of heavy lifting, and to haul all that data from San Francisco to Montana, we have to take the site down, starting at 8:00 a.m. PST on Tuesday morning. We don't think the move will take more than four hours, but there's always the possibility that it could take longer (the best laid plans and all).

What Does This Mean for You?

During the downtime, nothing on LJ will be available—no posting, no Friends page, no LJ mail, nada. When we bring the site back up, we're going to ease into it rather than open up a floodgate of traffic. Posting might not be immediately available or the site could be slow to load for a while.

New servers mean new IP addresses, so it's possible that LJ mail might not reach your email inbox because your email provider or client doesn't recognize the new IP addresses. We're working with email providers to whitelist the new IPs. There are a few things you can do on your end:
  • Add these two IP addresses to your "allowed senders" list (or whitelist) and address book in your email client: 208.93.0.18 and 208.93.0.50. These are the new IPs for sending comments notifications and LJ mail to your email inbox.

  • Add lj_notify@livejournal.com and webmaster@livejournal.com to your email address book.

If you can't edit the spam or junk filters in your email client, you may need to disable them entirely. Make these changes just before 8:00 a.m. PST on Tuesday morning or shortly after the site comes back up to ensure that your LJ mail makes it to your inbox.

Those of you who use domain aliasing to forward your domain to your LiveJournal will need to create a CNAME record that maps to livejournal.com. Please note that we're no longer supporting the A record. For more information, check the domain forwarding FAQ.

Before the move, you can check [info]lj_maintenance for complete details about the planned downtime. During the move, you can check status.livejournal.org for updates about the site's status.

Permanent Account Sale Delayed

We regret to inform you that due to the server move, the Permanent Account sale has been pushed back to December 4, rather than November 20 as announced in the last news post. After the virtual dust has settled from the move, we'll be able to turn our attention to the Permanent Account sale. Except for the start date, the details remain the same: You have a limited opportunity to purchase LJ for life for only $175. It's a bummer to delay the sale, but on the bright side, you have more time to save up.

But What About A La Carte Userpics?

We know we promised more information about a la carte userpics, and we're sorry that details have not been forthcoming (blame it on the move). We're still planning on having a la carte userpics, but we don’t have any details yet. When the move is over, we'll have more information. We're sorry for the delay.

I got you this month! I hope you don't mind me taking a few liberties - I kept looking at your sketch and trying to figure out exactly if she was translucent... I got that vibe so I went with that... Spooky demonic zombie mare, awesome.

PS: I absolutely love  her horns. I don't get to draw horns often, so this was awfully fun!

The Hills Burninate, and a surprise...
First, a surprise.

My Mom said that a local paper in her town in Indiana posted an article about Prop 8 here in California.

In it, they equate the passage of prop 8 with Segregationist Governor Wallace's attempt at blocking the entrance to the Alabama school, to try and keep the black student from entering.

In short, people are starting to clue in that discrimination against gays is no different than discrimination against blacks.

And if a small Indiana town can publish that in it's paper, that is a hopeful tone. (Though I wonder if that would have happened if McCain had been elected.)

And everything is on fire in SoCal. The air is thick with smoke, and it hurts to breathe.

One of the big fires is less than 20 miles to the sough of me. :/

New Commission
Interesting that I've had two Arctic Fox commissions recently. It's not an animal I get a lot of requests for (though I think they're peachy keen:)

"Alex" for the very cool Foxonian. I think this is my fifth commission for him and he's always a pleasure to work with.

UNPacking...

I'm not sure which is worse...  Packing, or unpacking.  Let's just say that moving in general, is a royal pain...

I had originally planned to get out to the bowling alley early this afternoon to get a few things done there.  As it turned out, I spent the better part of the day moving boxes around in the house, unpacking a few things, and more rearranging to make room for the items I brought out in the Explorer.  Normally this isn't really an issue, but this trip was mostly stuff that had no boxes, so it couldn't just be piled up with other boxed items as it was unloaded; Space had to be found for each item, and this took quite a long time.

Fortunately, the weather has been continuing to hold, so I had no problems unloading as far as that went.  I was even able to leave the door for the house open as there was barely a breeze (much less the forecasted high winds) and the temperature was quite balmy.  I fed the horses their evening feed, and got to the bowling alley around 6:30pm.  We had scheduled a meeting for "all interested bowlers" for 7pm, to discuss the formation of leagues and to get feedback from them as to how we could best serve the communities needs.

I think the meeting went quite well, and we got some valuable feedback from the participants.  Not as many people came as I had hoped, but it was enought to get started.  One of the main concerns was which days we ought to be open, and it was reassuring to learn that we had picked the proper days.  We're open Monday through Saturday, and closed on Sundays.  I had concerns that maybe people would like to bowl on a Sunday, as sort of a "family thing" to do, but the feedback from the group was that Sunday was the best day to take off.  So that stands, and we're all happy.

People are anxious to get the leagues going again, and that will be a lot easier to accomodate once I'm fully moved out here, and we can keep the alley open later at night.  As it stands, during the week we have to close too early for most of the league-bowlers.  We'll be meeting with the representative from the Canadian 5-Pin Bowling Association in the next couple of days as well, to get everything set up and registered properly.  It was pretty late when we finally got home, but it was worth it to get the information and feedback we needed.

Oh! DEER!!!

Made it out to the farm without much trouble.  The Explorer does surprisingly well for fuel economy on the highway, much better than it does in the city.  I almost hit my first deer on the way out though - I was already past Shaunavon, only a few more minutes away from the farm, when a deer walked out right onto the road in front of me!

Fortunately, the road was dry and there was no oncoming traffic.  I had to brake hard, and was sounding the horn as well.  The deer just stood there, staring at me like...  well....  Like a deer caught in the headlights!   I was able to stop about 30' away from him(?) and he ran back into the ditch where two or three other deer were standing.  Thankfully we both survived the encounter, but I wonder if his adrenalin was pumping as much as mine was afterwards?

The horses were happy to see me when I arrived, and since Trixstir and the kidling were still at a 4-H meeting, I fed and watered them.  Trixstir and the kidling arrived just as I was finishing, so we unloaded a few critical things from the Explorer, and left the rest for tomorrow.  I've had little sleep, and thankfully that wasn't an issue while I was driving, but I'm really looking forward to crawling into bed for the night.  It's been a long day, and there's a lot to do tomorrow.

FC plans emerging!
The time is set!

Ok, San Fransisco, here I come! :-D I have booked my flights from 17th of January, a few days of freedom in the California world until FC2009 kicks in on the Thursday. I'll be at FC all the time this year, returning back home to Sweden on the evening of Tuesday 27th - gotta get a room monday/tuesday...

So I have from arrival on the 17th January a few (4 or 5 actually!) days to kick back in the SF area. And I am plotting on MAYBE getting one of them apartment suite/rooms where there is a small living room and a bedroom with maybe 1 or 2 beds. Maybe some fur from out of state want to crash in and split a SF hotel bill to see the sights, poke into weird shops etc. I'm also a utterly nerdy culture person so I'll be doing the museum and gallery rounds as well. I am not a "Party woot BOOOZE!" person at all, I quite prefer to slouch away in a nice sofa at Starbucks or some other nice café with a good decent selection of teas in the evenings if I can. ;-) Plus I ama non-smoke, non-prude, nonreligious, non judgmental straightforward person who do not want to babysit anyone - so be prepared to either tag along and be involved in various activities or come up with ideas that will be interesting and educational. Artistic ideas and such are very very fun to exchange!! Interested? Note me or email me.

Also time to look through the catsuits as well. I have one that I plot on finishing. I don't want to keep it, so I'll probably offer it here first and if it doesn't sell it'll go on eBay.

The black cat needs to be tested and looked over, possibly gently handwashed as well. I need to get new SHOES that doesn't squeeeaze my toes that bad. *grunt* Got my red cat on suggested-painting-improvement in the USA and hoping to get her finished during December so I get her home in time to doll her up! ;-D

So far so good. I'll update as I coem up with ideas.... :-)

Nice to know I haven't lost my sex appeal...
So, my workplace hosts community meetings on Saturdays.

And there's unwashed masses walking around in here while we are open to the public.

And I was in the men's room, washing my hands, when this guy comes in, and starts groping me while my hands are in the water.

Now normally this would be a funny, and interesting occurrence. But as is usually the case with these kinds of situations, the guy doing the groping isn't somebody you would want touching you.

So I asked him to quit it, and of course got indignant that I had asked him to stop.

This is probably what guys who grope women do when asked to stop.

Anyways, I felt this was journal-worthy. :)

Question about linux filesystem
Hey folks: I'm currently experimenting with Kubuntu (8.04.1) for my primary OS. By the end of the year, I plan on building a storage server with 2, 1tb drives to hold my stuff, and the office's files.

I'm a bit unsure about linux's filesystems and hope you can explain somethings for me.

In Windows, I usually make a 10g or so partition (C: Drive) and use that for only the OS, and programs. Then the D: drive is my work partition, around 4g, while the remaining (E:) is storage. The D: drive is set that size so it forces me to back it up periodically, and keep it cleaned out. This system has worked out well, when it comes time to reinstall, defragment, or a bad crash that takes out Windows.

Now these partitions, according to Windows are physical boundries. But is linux the same? Or is it more of a dynamic partition?

When I installed Kubuntu on my main system, I just let it do as it thought best. It has a 200g HD, and a 350g HD, and I let it have both drives.

What I'm curious about: How would you set up a file system like this in Linux? Would you make a /home/shado/_work (that's the d: drive), and /home/shado/_library (that's the e: drive) and will linux use both harddrives to store everything?

There was an O'Reilly article on "Proper Filesystem Layout" but it didn't quite tell me everything I'm asking. You can read the article here: http://www.linuxdevcenter.com/pub/a/linux/2001/10/11/filesystem.html

Thanks for any advice.
